Supreme Court nominee ‘outed’ as a lesbian 13 May In remarks which outraged gay rights groups, Cardinal Javier Lozano Barragan, 76, claimed that people were not born homosexual, but chose to embrace homosexuality of their own free will. Left-leaning MPs in Italy have proposed various kinds of legislation for some kind of homosexual union in recent years. But the measures have gone nowhere in the face of stiff opposition from the Vatican, which continues to wield enormous influence over Italian politics. Vitellius 69 The Roman Empire “officially” begins by tradition in 27 BC when Octavian receives the title “Augustus” — which then becomes the name by which we know him. We might think that the Empire, Imperium, begins with Augustus becoming Emperor, Imperator, but that is not the case. Imperator simply means “commander,” and this had long been in use with a specific meaning. An imperator was someone with a military command and imperium, which meant both military and civil authority in the area of his command.
This made Julius Caesar essentially the dictator of Gaul , once he had conquered it. That was dangerous, indeed fatal, for the Republic; but in those terms Julius Caesar began the creation of the Roman Empire already as an “emperor. It accompanies the institutional changes that were effected or completed by Augustus. The institution thus created now gets called the “Principate,” from Princeps, “Prince” literally, “comes first”.
The idea of the Principate is that the forms of the Republic are retained, and the Emperor superficially is simply still an official of the Republic. Augustus was not a king. He did not even hold the Republican office of Dictator, as Julius Caesar had.

In the meantime, what is your reaction to their choices? Did they leave any cities off? Should some of the cities on the list not be on the list? Might it not have been better to determine how Catholic a city is based on the number of priests the city produces or how many parishioners attend mass every week? After all, the last place I think of when I think of the Catholic faith is Los Angeles — one of the most materialistic cities in the world.
In fact, I think they did a decent job with what seems to be an innocent, thought-provoking exercise.

An independent inquiry is being carried out into abuse at institutions, including the Catholic Church.
Representatives from both schools told the inquiry they apologised for past failings. The inquiry heard child protection failures may remain, despite numerous inquiries and convictions. The Roman Catholic Church is one of 13 public organisations being scrutinised. Counsel to the inquiry Riel Karmy-Jones said evidence suggested safeguarding problems were still ongoing and children may “inevitably” remain at risk.
She said in many instances, church officials chose to keep abuse quiet while families were pressured not to report assaults, offenders were shifted to different establishments unpunished, and complaints were simply ignored. Previous inquiries into Catholic Church schools such as Ampleforth have revealed behaviour ranging from rape to voyeuristic beatings over many years, and resulted in convictions. Predators include teacher David Lowe, jailed in for 10 years for 15 indecent assaults on boys under Lowe’s offences were traced back to the s at Westminster Cathedral School and Ampleforth.

Kate Gallafen, representing the English Benedictine Congregation and Downside school, also expressed the remorse of both institutions. She said a review and audit of safeguarding procedures had been commissioned at Downside, which will be carried out by the Social Care Institute for Excellence. The inquiry is due to hear three weeks of evidence looking at the two institutions.
